Shimla and Manali are the most popular hill-station pair for groups travelling from Delhi. Done by road in a Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania, the trip is comfortable, flexible and great value for families.
The route
Delhi to Shimla is about 350 km via Panipat, Ambala and Chandigarh, then up the hills through Parwanoo and Solan — usually 7–8 hours. Shimla to Manali is about 250 km via Bilaspur, Mandi and the Kullu valley.
How many days?
- 5–6 days: Shimla (2 nights) and Manali (2–3 nights)
- 7 days: adds Kullu, Manikaran or a relaxed day in Manali
Good stops on the way
- Murthal dhabas on the Delhi–Panipat highway for breakfast
- Chandigarh for a short break before the hill drive
- Pandoh Dam and the Beas river views between Mandi and Kullu
Seasonal tips
- March to June is the main summer season — book vehicles early.
- December to February brings snow; some roads near Manali can close after heavy snowfall.
- Rohtang Pass needs a separate permit with daily limits; Atal Tunnel and Sissu are usually easier to plan.
